2014 Annual Excellence Awards
Call for Nominations

The Ohio Economic Development Association’s annual excellence awards program recognizes the achievements individuals and organizations in Ohio in the areas of economic and workforce development.  Submit your nominations today and have excellence in your community recognized state-wide!

A panel of OEDA members will assess the nominations, determine finalists, and select an overall winner.  Award winners will be announced at a ceremony during the OEDA Annual Summit to be held October 22 - 24 Columbus Marriott Northwest 5605 Blazer Pkwy. Dublin, OH 43017. Award finalists will be notified prior to the Annual Summit.

Winners and finalists will be promoted on OEDA’s website and in an OEDA e-newsletter. This information may also be published by winners and finalists in the media and used for promotional purposes.

H.B. 345 Would Require the DSA to Keep the Value of its Tax Credits Public

Ohio Rep. Nick Barborak (D-Lisbon) recently delivered sponsor testimony for H.B. 345, which he introduced in November to require the director of the Ohio Development Services Agency (DSA) to estimate the revenue that would be foregone by the state as a result of each tax incentive proposed to the Tax Credit Authority. The bill would also require DSA to publish the director’s estimates on its website, consistent with current DSA practice. Rep. Barborak said his bill would codify this practice to ensure the information is always publicly accessible.
 
 
City of Avon Selects Pam Fechter to Assume its Newly Created Economic Development Coordinator Position

The City of Avon in Lorain County recently created a new economic development coordinator position, The Plain Dealer reports. Pam Fechter, of Avon Lake, was selected from more than two dozen applicants to take the job, effective May 5th. Fechter is "currently the project manager of Team Lorain County, a public-private partnership that aggressively markets Lorain County to promote new jobs and investments and support existing companies," the article said.

Market Competition is an Opportunity for Substantial Power Rate Reduction

Many states are moving to a utility model that permits customer choice as a means reduce power costs.  Electric Choice was first introduced in Michigan in 2000.  However, the Michigan Electric Choice program provides that no more than 10 % of an electric utility's average weather-adjusted retail sales for the preceding calendar year may take service from an alternative electric supplier at any time. Michigan, unlike Ohio and Illinois offers a very limited approach to utility choice.  Ohio is in full swing related to offering electric and natural gas choice for residential, commercial and industrial customers.

JobsOhio Project Highlights

The Daily-Record reports on the groundbreaking of a 200,00 square-foot Daisy Brand sour cream plant that will employ 89 Ohioans and spur research and innovation in Wooster. This is Daisy Brand's first facility east of the Mississippi River. Read more.

The Lima News reports Lakeview Farms, a dairy product manufacturer, is bringing 200 jobs to Delphos. The JobsOhio Revitalization Program will help open a shuttered Reser facility to accommodate Lakeview's growth and consolidation from Wisconsin. Read more.

JobsOhio announced that advanced auto parts manufacturer Unique-Chardan, Inc. is growing its footprint in Ohio with the creation of 30 new jobs and retention of 52 jobs at its facility in Bryan. Read more.

JobsOhio's Board of Directors held its quarterly meeting in Cincinnati on April 18. JobsOhio covered recent project wins and industry catalysts, and introduced the firm's Director of Compliance. Read more.

The Plain Dealer reports JobsOhio committed $750,000 to support efforts by Global Cleveland to attract people and talent to Northeast Ohio. Read more.

John Minor discussed JobsOhio's economic development efforts in Northeast Ohio with mayors, development officials, public finance officials, and county representatives at the City Club in Cleveland.

Senior Managing Director Mark Patton provided a JobsOhio update before the Cincinnati Regional Business Committee Board Meeting at the Queen City Club.
