Hudson launches City-Owned Fiber-Optic Broadband for Local Businesses

Velocity Broadband to provide faster, more robust service, making Hudson one of the first "Gigabit" Cities in the Midwest

City of Hudson
July 22, 2015
HUDSON, Ohio – July 22, 2015 – The City of Hudson is excited to launch a major economic development initiative that will position local businesses for growth and our city for future development.

City Manager Jane Howington and Assistant City Manager Frank Comeriato today announced the city’s formation of Velocity Broadband, and unveiled a logo for the new service that is so fast, and so robust, it will make Hudson one of the first “gigabit” cities in the Midwest. This will place Hudson on the forefront of technology, joining only a select few cities nationwide to offer high-speed, fiber-optic broadband Internet and voice services directly to the community. When up and running, the new fiber-optic Velocity Broadband system will provide a “gigabit” of speed—that is up to 100 times faster than any Internet available in Hudson and most cities today. This means residents will be able to download movies and games much faster and businesses will be able to operate at the speed of the market today.

“Scott represents some of the largest fluid power manufacturers in the industry and we stock $6 million in products to fulfill our customers’ immediate requirements,” said Christina Logan, the company’s president, in a statement.

Tech start-up companies often measure success not just through product development, but by the amount of capital they are able to raise.  Due to the unique nature of many of these tech start-up companies that require substantial early stage capital before any customer is even approached, tech start-up companies focus on investments from venture capital funds and angel investors.

Matt Abbott, Executive Director

Apex Sports and its owner William Wilson have brought softball manufacturing back to the United States after three decades.  Apex Sports is located in Zanesville-Muskingum County at the county’s business incubator, MCBI. According to a recent article in The Columbus Dispatch, “Apex Sports is serving a very small market of independent softball leagues and tournaments. Once he receives orders for 100 dozen balls a week, Wilson said he’ll focus on getting his softballs certified by the National Softball Association and the Amateur Softball Association.”   Currently each softball manufactured by Apex is done so by hand, which takes about thirty-five minutes to produce each ball.  The price of the softballs can range from $4.99 to $6.99 and can be customized with any logo.  Last year Apex Sports produced and sold 2.1 million softballs nationwide.  In the Columbus Dispatch article Wilson explained, “This stuff is American-made, and you don’t realize how much better it is until you start using it.”
