High-tech companies and regions alike succeed by building a high-tech EcoSystem that focuses as much as on workforce development and "buy local" campaigns as they do raising early stage capital. The Montrose Group, LLC lives technology based economic development and created a High-tech EcoSystem model that can help technology companies and regions alike.

A $5 million business incubator coming to Circleville is modeled on entrepreneurial centers such as Rev1 Ventures, the Dublin Entrepreneurial Center and Innovate New Albany – but with southeast Ohio character, economic development officials say.

Ohio Incumbent Workforce
Training Voucher Program

Ohio Development Services Agency

More than 122,000 Ohio employees have been trained through the Ohio Incumbent Workforce Training Voucher Program, and now the fourth round of funding is available to businesses. In Fiscal Year 2016 $6.9 million is available for employers to enhance the skills of their employees.

Training in the following high-demand fields is eligible:  Advanced Manufacturing, Aerospace and Aviation, Automotive, Back Office, BioHealth, Corporate Headquarters, Energy, Financial Services, Food Processing, Information Technology and Services, Logistics, Polymers and Chemicals, and Research and Development.  Training opportunities include, but are not limited to, operational skills training, certification processes and equipment training. Training can occur at the employer’s facility, the provider’s training facility or at a third-party site.

The Ohio Development Services Agency will reimburse the employer for up to 50 percent of the eligible training costs, up to $4,000 per employee, after 1) the employer pays the full cost of the training, and 2) the employee successfully completes the training. The maximum amount an employer may qualify for in a fiscal year is $100,000. The company must be in operation for at least 12 months in Ohio to participate.

The Ohio Development Services Agency will soon be announcing the dates for round 4. For more information about the Ohio Incumbent Workforce Training Voucher Program visit http://development.ohio.gov/bs/bs_wtvp.htm.

Trumbull County Brownfield Coalition Forging New Links

By Sarah Lown and Julie Edwards

The Trumbull County Brownfield Coalition is an outgrowth of successful brownfield redevelopment in Mahoning County, Trumbull's neighbor to the south.  Lead by the Western Reserve Port Authority and Trumbull County Planning Commission, the Coalition applied for and received a $600,000 U.S. EPA Brownfield Assessment Grant in 2013.  Other members of the coalition include the City of Warren, Howland Township, and the Mahoning River Corridor Initiative.

“Trumbull County’s brownfield sites are located in and around our urban cores.  They are large tracts of affordable land packed with potential for economic development because they offer access to highways, rail lines, and other infrastructure that businesses need.  Potential contamination of these sites has caused a barrier to redevelopment.  For too long, brownfields have been regarded solely as problems when in fact, under the right conditions, they can be an incredibly powerful asset that drives business creation and job growth,” said Sarah V. Lown, Senior Manager for Economic Development at the Port Authority.

JobsOhio

By Lee Crume

Ohio is fortunate to have outstanding economic development professionals across the state. JobsOhio is committed to supporting the great work of those professionals through our managing directors that serve as liaisons to the key industries that drive our state.

This year, we’ve added two outstanding industry specialists to our roster of managing directors, and we encourage OEDA members to reach out to them for assistance and to leverage their expertise.

Ted Griffith is our managing director for Information Technology and Distribution & Logistics. He came to JobsOhio in February after 21 years at Hewlett-Packard, where he held a number of leadership positions in locations around the world, including France, Germany, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore and Silicon Valley. With an MBA from The Ohio State University and a BSEE from Ohio Northern University, Ted volunteers his time as an advisor for startup companies at Rev1 and as a mentor for Relā’s leadership program.
