2016 Ohio Basic Economic
Development Course

The Ohio Basic Economic Development Course (OHIO BEDC) is an intensive training experience for economic development practitioners, community leaders, local government officials and others committed to building healthy economies for their communities.

The course meets for three days; April 5-7, 2016. The location chosen for the 2016 course is The Marriott Columbus Northwest, 5605 Blazer Parkway, Dublin, OH  43017, 614-791-1000.  The registration fee for the 2016 course is $700.  Registration is required no later than March 18th.

Call for Presentations for the
2016 Annual Summit

OEDA invites you to submit a proposal to present at the 2016 Annual Summit, themed “Connect and Collaborate,”to be held October 19-21 at the Columbus Marriott Northwest.  The OEDA Annual Summit offers an opportunity for you to showcase solutions, initiate provocative discussions, and share effective strategies to the many challenges facing economic developers in Ohio.  We are particularly interested in showcasing case studies related to community economic development and workforce development initiatives.  The theme this year is also indicative of the broad reach that economic development has and how we collaborate with partners in workforce, the private sector and other development agencies. Panel presentations are encouraged along with local case studies and examples.

Guidelines for Submission:      

  • Complete the Call for Presentations Form in its entirety at http://oeda.formstack.com/forms/2016summitcallforpres by April 22, 2016.
  • Presentations must be a minimum of 45 minutes in length, preferably with a question and answer period following the presentation.
  • Submission of a presentation does not guarantee participation in the program.  Submissions will be reviewed by the Annual Summit Planning Committee, and you will be contacted no later than June 30, 2016 if your presentation has been selected.
  • Annual Summit proposals should not be submitted unless each presenter is available to appear on any day of the Annual Summit (Oct. 19-21, 2016). Accepted proposals will not be assigned a specific speaking date and time until the agenda is established (after June 30, 2016).

If you’re an early stage technology or tech-enabled company with fewer than 75 employees, and less than 7 years in business, you could be eligible for the Ohio Tech Internship program.  It offers up to $10,000 to support an intern to help offset the cost, providing companies with talent to grow and prosper.  Applications are now open to businesses and students.

Regional Chamber, Valley Leaders Visit Cuba to Explore Exporting Opportunities

Regional Chamber Senior Vice President of Economic Development Sarah Boyarko was part of a group of eight leaders—including three from the Valley—who traveled to Cuba last week to explore exporting opportunities. The group, comprising elected officials, companies and consultants, was exposed to Cuban culture, specific business opportunities and Cuban education and government officials.

Boyarko said this trip—the first of several that will take place—was an introductory opportunity to explore exporting opportunities within the approved industries of agriculture, building and construction materials, telecommunications, energy and other equipment and tools to support Cuban entrepreneurs.

Buckeye Hills Designated as Regional Transportation Planning Organization

Buckeye Hills-Hocking Valley Regional Development District

Governor John Kasich designated Buckeye Hills-Hocking Valley Regional Development District (Buckeye Hills) as an Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) Regional Transportation Planning Organization (RTPO).  RTPOs formalize and strengthen the rural consultation and transportation planning processes, more closely linking them to potential economic and community development planning efforts.

“Over the past two years,the RTPO Pilot Program has benefited the State of Ohio in many ways,” said Jennifer Townley, Deputy Director of the ODOT Division of Planning. “Not only has ODOT developed relationships with the pilot agencies, but the program has also led to increased regional collaboration. These relationships lead to better and more informed transportation decision making.”

JobsOhio Achieved Record Jobs, Projects and Capital Investment in 2015

Innovative companies across the United States and the world are recognizing that Ohio has the formula for success. 2015 proved to be a record year for our state and we have many of you across OEDA to thank for these record results.

The 2015 Annual Report and 2016 Strategic Plan reports that JobsOhio achieved record metrics in 2015, announcing 330 projects with companies that committed to create 23,602 new jobs and invest $6.7 billion in new capital.  All three metrics are the highest levels achieved by JobsOhio.  More than 9,000 of those new job announcements occurred in the fourth quarter, which represents the company’s best quarterly achievement.

Ohio's economic development professionals are the leaders in our communities in developing initiatives and programs that will help Ohio companies and communities find success.  It is vitally important for us to work together to keep and attract jobs to Ohio.
