Professional Development

A large part of our mission at OEDA is to offer professional development opportunities to our members in order to enhance their skills as an economic developer. We offer a variety of programs including the annual Basic Economic Development Course, free webinars throughout the year, and customized regional courses in each of the six JobsOhio Network regions. 

Ohio Economic Development Institute

As a program created BY Ohio economic development experts FOR Ohio economic development professionals, the Ohio Economic Development Institute offers a valuable Ohio-centric curriculum. Every course takes into consideration Ohio’s programs, laws, regulations and reflects an in-depth understanding of the specific challenges and opportunities in the various regions of our state.  The OEDI curriculum aligns with the JobsOhio state economic development model to ensure the knowledge gained returns immediate value to your organization and community.  OEDI currently offers four core courses and serves as the pathway to achieving the Ohio Certified Economic Developer credential.

Ohio Basic Economic Development Course (Ohio BEDC)

This is an extensive three-day training experience accredited by the International Economic Development Council (IEDC). It is for economic development practitioners, community leaders, local government officials and others committed to building healthy economies for their communities. The course is typically held once per year in March in the Columbus Region. Please visit our event calendar for more information.

Since the Ohio BEDC is accredited by IEDC, it can serve as a prerequisite to attend further professional development courses with IEDC and sit for the CEcD certification. To learn more about professional development at IEDC, click here


With limits on time and travel budgets, webinars are becoming a preferred means of presenting professional development training. OEDA offers numerous webinars throughout the year on various relevant economic development topics and are typically free for members. They are conveniently offered around lunchtime and last about an hour. Check out our event calendar to see when we offer the next webinar.

OEDA Partnership with Council of Development Finance Agencies (CDFA)

The Council of Development Finance Agencies (CDFA) is a national association dedicated to the advancement of development finance concerns and interests. This partnership provide OEDA members access to the nation’s leading and most knowledgeable members of the development finance community.  The CDFA offers live webcasts, online resources, live events dedicated to economic development finance tools. Topics include bonds, redevelopment, tax credits, revolving loan funds, capital access, energy finance, seed and venture capital, public-private partnerships, best practices and other programming covering the entire development finance toolbox.
